Summer 2010

As the end of another great school year comes to a close, we want to take a moment to say thank you for being our valued customer throughout the school year, and congratulate you for being a parent who has chosen to enroll your child in school band or orchestra. Now that your child has been through a year of school band or orchestra, they are involved in something very special. Not only are they learning to play music, but studies have shown that you will see positive changes in many areas of their life. Learning music and practicing often helps children further develop cognitive skills, higher self-esteem, and positive social interactions to name a few.

We encourage you to help your student continue progressing this summer. How? By enrolling your student in private music lessons. Private music lessons during the summer are fun! There is no pressure to earn a grade, practice time does not compete with other homework, but most importantly, your child will be developing life skills vital to his or her development. Additionally, your music student will continue to improve their musical skills, and will be even more ready for another great year of band or orchestra next school year.

We have enclosed a list of private teachers with this letter. There are many to choose from in almost ever local Utah city. We encourage you to look through this list and consider private lessons for your child.

At Summerhays Music, we’re always ready and willing to help your student succeed. If you have questions or would like more information on how to engage your child in music this summer, please call us or stop in any time.

How can I help my child succeed in music?

Talk to your child about the importance of music, and the importance of practice. Throughout our years of working with music students, we’ve found the following tips to be very helpful for parents of musicians:

  • Set aside 30 minutes per day at home for uninterrupted practice time.
  • Have a dedicated space for practice, free from distractions such as TV, video games, or brothers and sisters.
  • Provide a metronome/tuner and music stand. These are crucial tools to help your student play in time, in tune, and with proper posture.
  • Take your student to local music concerts. Watching a professional symphony, jazz band, or other local musicians will show your student what they can achieve with practice, provide them with inspiration, and allow them to enjoy the amazing experience of a live performance. We keep an updated list of local events on our website
(www.summerhaysmusic.com) and the Utah Symphony even provides discounted tickets for students (see www.utahsymphony.org).
  • Support them through those moments of frustration. Your student is sure to have moments where they find that learning an instrument can be a challenge – and that’s normal! With a little hard work and concentration, your student can easily overcome these challenges and become a better musician.
