Educational Road Representative


For 85 years, Summerhays Music Center (SMC) has inspired beginner, intermediate, and advanced musicians throughout Utah, Idaho and Wyoming to join band/orchestra.  We strive to provide every customer, musician, and educator with quality products and the best customer service. 


The primary goal of an Education Road Rep is to build strong, positive relationships with music educators and generating outside sales and rentals through schools. Educational Road Reps are responsible for generating sales and rentals through events and clinics outside the store, aiding with student retention and recruitment, and generally servicing the needs of music educators. 


  • Carry out strategy and brand goal directives of SMC
  • Provide the best customer service to educators to meet and increase rentals / sales goals
  • Pick up, track, and drop off instrument repairs
  • Set up rental night events with educators
  • Schedule “Step Up” events in the classroom for students to try out professional instruments
  • Develop and maintain productive, effective, and professional relationships with retail store sales staff and management
  • Stay current on industry trends and products 


  • Passionate about music and music education
  • Able to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form
  • Detail-oriented and organized 
  • Comfortable presenting products/product information to large groups
  • Friendly, personable, and able to develop and foster positive relationships in the music community 


  • 2-3 years of retail or sales experience
  • Ability to travel and work some late-night events
  • Valid driver’s license 
  • Able to lift and carry boxes and instruments off all size and weight

Repair & Setup Specialist/Restoration Apprentice Summerhays Music Center (SMC) specializes in the sales, rental, repair and restoration of orchestral stringed instruments. The SMC mission is to enhance and serve the musical community of Utah with unique access to a complete and full service orchestral stringed instrument shop, offering professional service and sales of orchestra family instruments. Part of the excitement is that every customer has a unique musical need and it is up to us to assist them in expressing the issue, need or problem. Customer satisfaction is our number one priority. SMC is a family-owned business for over 85 years.

Job Summary: SMC is seeking an experienced orchestral stringed instrument repair person. This position requires autonomy, communication, and stringed instrument repair skills and is part of the team working toward our common goal. This position is responsible for performing set-up and repair of instruments and bows, and communicating the repair schedule.

Position Description: Primary tasks include but are not limited to the following: responsible for bridge making, crack repair, string changing, varnish touchup, soundpost adjustments, fingerboard planing, neck reset and some aspects of bow re-hairing and repair. Apprentice will work autonomously and under the guidance of shop owners to ensure that rental and customer instruments are set up correctly and are tonally and aesthetically pleasing. We support all levels of instruments from beginner through professional. Includes a willingness to provide exceptional customer service, and a desire to sell. Minimum Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s License and reliable transportation.
  • Be Punctual, Responsible, Accountable.
  • Be able to work Saturdays.

Ideal Qualifications Include * Graduate from a known violin making/repair school -or- 1 year of experience working in an orchestral string repair shop.

  • Ability or interest in playing an orchestral stringed instrument

Pay Structure * Hourly Wage.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $18.00 - $23.00 per hour
