Violin Sizing Guide - What Size Do You Need?

Violins come in many sizes. Getting the correct-sized instrument helps you learn proper playing technique and will be more comfortable to hold. Conversely, the wrong-sized instrument can lead to physical discomfort and be discouraging for new players.

If you’re not sure what size violin your child needs, we’ve got you covered. We’ve put together this handy violin sizing chart below.

Already Have a Violin? Try This Alternative Method

If you have access to a violin, you can check if it’s the right size without measuring arm length. You can also visit us at Summerhays to use our sizing violins.

  1. Place the violin on your child’s left shoulder.
  2. Extend their arm past the scroll (the decorative part at the end) and wrap their hand around it.

If they can curl their hand around the scroll, then it’s a good fit. If they can’t, then you’ll need a smaller-sized violin.

To double check, have your child hold the violin in playing position. If their arm roughly forms a 90-degree angle, then the violin should be a good fit.

If the angle is really wide, then the instrument is most likely too big. And if the angle is too small, you may need the next size up.

What to Do If You’re “In Between Sizes”

When in doubt, choose the smaller size.

It’s tempting to give your kid an instrument they can grow into. But even playing an instrument that’s slightly too big will cause them to stretch their hands and fingers too much, resulting in physical discomfort.

A smaller-sized violin will be more comfortable to play, and help them learn proper technique. Only move up when they’re 100% ready.

When to Upgrade Sizes

Every child is different, and some will grow faster than others. But generally, you can size up about every other year until you grow into a full-sized instrument.
