The Correct Use of Fine Tuners
- A professional instrument will often only have one fine tuner on the E string.
- Over time the fine tuner will get screwed all the way in and become useless in tuning.
- Before you start the tuning process, unscrew the fine tuner until the screw hits the lower part of the fine tuner. This equals 5-6 mm, or about a half step.
- Do not unscrew the fine tuner too much or the screw will fall out.
- If you unscrew your fine tuners every day before tuning you will create a wide range of tuning possibility.
- You cannot break a string with a fine tuner.
- Whittner tailpieces, used on all of Summerhays Music student instruments, have all four fine tuners built into the tailpiece. Before tuning, unscrew all fine tuners till the screw hits the lower part of the fine tuner as described above. Then, begin the tuning process using the tuning pegs first, then using the fine tuners to achieve each desired string pitch.
